Janet Olmsted Cross, AIA is a New York State registered architect and has also worked for over 20 years as a design build general contractor.
From 1990-1996 she worked closely with Architect Steven Holl on "Kiasma" art museum in Helsinki, and an addition to Saaranin's Institute of Science at Cranbrook.
Since 1988 she has collaborated with artist James Turrell on his Roden Crater project, a naked eye observatory in Flagstaff, AZ, and as modelbuilder on a series of free-standing artworks or autonomous spaces. Working as an architect for the Whitney Museum, the Bronx Public Library, the MAK Museum for Applied Arts in Vienna and as Director of Operations for Ace Gallery, NY, she installed numerous large scale exhibitions for artists including Michael Heizer, Bill Viola, Dennis Oppenheim and Inugo Manglano Ovalle.
Since 1997 Janet completed several commercial projects and townhouses from the ground up. With the Italian design firm LO:TEK she served as general contractor for Artist Lawrence Weiner and his wife Alice. The Weiner residence includes radiant heating as well as solar panels which produce almost one third of the home's energy requirements. The 5 story townhouse has been widely published.
Janet converted a 5 story town house into the Sukyo Mahikari Center for Spiritual Development. The renovation won a High Performance Building and LEED Silver Awards.
As a great-great granddaughter of Central Park designer Frederick Law Olmsted, Janet has served on the board of the National Association for Olmsted Parks. She also served 4 years on the board of Glynnwood Center, a 250 acre land conservation project in Cold Spring, NY devoted to sustainable farming practices and adapting old farmland to new uses.
For the past 10 years, Janet has also served as an architect for a 500 acre land conservation project in Forestburgh NY with scope encompassing the layout and construction of barns, shelters and pens for rescued animals including alpacas, camels, guanacos and giant tortoises.
Janet's practice focuses on real estate development to build equity for property owners, including new construction, real improvements, letters of completion and Place of Assembly Permits and Certificates of Occupancy for a variety of use groups. Her professional expertise is directed towards enabling owners to lease, refinance or sell properties more profitably. She is currently serving as the Architect of Record for a new Certificate of Occupancy for a 6 story building occupied by NASA.
