Cross Architecture renovated an existing Longshoremans Hiring Hall,
designed by the owner Douglas Christmas, to create new 20,000 square foot art gallery
for the installation of large-scale artworks. During the final stages of construction,
a major retrospective of artist Michael Heizer was installed, including large boulders
weighing over 49,000 pounds. Pits were excavated in the existing concrete floors,
and steel transfer beams were installed to accommodate the massive art.
